Still riding at 93 – and no plans to stop.

You can age by counting years – or by stopping altogether.

Movement has always been part of Klaus Schüder's life. The 93-year-old grew up on a farm in Schleswig-Holstein, spending his childhood outdoors. He went on to become a passionate gardener, taking on large projects well into his 78th year – with his bike by his side the whole time.

When age makes itself known

Early 2025 brought a serious setback. A back inflammation left him barely able to walk – mostly bedridden. He wondered whether he'd ever ride a bike again. Recovery was slow, but his sons were determined to find a way to get him back in the saddle. After a long search, they came across the Kettwiesel ONE trike by Hase Bikes. What caught Klaus's attention most was the suspension system – individual wheel suspension and swing axles on the rear wheels. From the very first test ride, it was clear: he had never ridden anything this comfortable or stable. Klaus was sceptical at first, standing in the Hase Bikes Schaltwerk on the grounds of Zeche Waltrop, when consultant Robin Beyer told him: "I'm about to show you a bike you'd normally never get on." Klaus sat down on the ONE with its lower handlebar – and rode off. "It was amazing," he says today. "So safe. So easy."

New mobility – new joy

These days, Klaus gets on his trike every day, takes hold of the lower handlebar and heads out. He can stop without dismounting and moves through the world with confidence. On three wheels, he notices more of the nature around him, stays independent and keeps his muscles working – sometimes even without the motor. Many people his age hesitate to make the switch from two wheels to three. Klaus has a different take: "You can age by counting years – or by stopping altogether," he says, and laughs. He regularly rides up to 50 km around Lingen – to the shops, to his old allotment, or simply to enjoy being outside.
