The exhibition “Container – The Global Box” shows how a steel box has transformed global trade. Our bicycle components also travel in containers. It makes visible what global supply chains mean – and why we at Hase Bikes take responsibility for more transparent and sustainable transport routes.

Sustainability at Hase Bikes
Our bikes are created from the drive to make the world a little better and from curiosity about what is possible.
For us, sustainability means taking responsibility. That’s why we use durable materials, design for repairability, and think in terms of long-term viability. Because it matters to us. We believe in bold ideas. In transparency. And in people who take action – with their minds, hearts, and hands. Our workforce is as diverse as the paths our bikes travel. Diversity, inclusion, fairness: these are not just items on a to-do list. They are what drives us every day.
We continuously evolve, question existing solutions, and consistently seek better ones. Always with the ambition to combine functionality, responsibility, and the joy of mobility.
We never stop moving forward – or rather: riding forward.
Our Sustainability Measures and Goals
We take responsibility – for what we do today and for what we can improve tomorrow. That’s why we are constantly working to make our processes more sustainable. Some steps have already been implemented, others still lie ahead. You can find an overview of our progress and sustainability goals here. Environment
Bicycle manufacturer from Germany As a bicycle manufacturer based in Germany, we produce our bikes at our Waltrop site. Final assembly takes place here – with short distances, high quality control, and transparent production. Some components are manufactured internationally, for example our frames in Taiwan. Wondering why? You can find the answer here. In the long term, we plan to relocate suppliers to Europe to reduce transport distances.
100% green electricity Since 2010, our site has been powered entirely by renewable energy. We also ensure efficient electricity use through LED lighting and well-insulated buildings in our newly constructed halls.
Own solar power The construction of our photovoltaic system at the Waltrop site has been completed. Once final certification is obtained, we will be able to fully utilize the generated solar energy. Starting in 2026, we plan to cover up to 60% of our electricity needs with self-generated solar power – a key step towards energy-autonomous and climate-friendly production.
Decarbonisation By 2028: CO₂ reduction through conversion of the entire vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.2-Reduktion durch Umstellung des gesamten Fuhrparks auf Elektrofahrzeuge.
Heat transition Our production hall is already heated using a heat pump and green electricity. Office spaces use modern green-electricity air conditioning systems. Defective gas heating systems are being gradually replaced by electric solutions – with the clear goal of completely eliminating fossil fuels.
Less packaging, more circularity Sustainable production also means conserving resources. Since 2024, we have been producing our own packaging filler material from old cardboard using an in-house cushioning machine. This reduces waste and avoids additional packaging materials. In the future, we plan to sell our bikes in reusable bike boxes to further close the packaging loop.
Quality instead of disposable products A sustainable bicycle is, above all, durable. That’s why we provide spare parts even for older models that are no longer in production. Through continuous product improvements, we extend the lifecycle of our bikes. One example: Hase Bikes panniers are manufactured without conventional zippers. Instead, we use elastic closures – more robust, easier to replace, and improving repairability.
Our goal: Emission-free Waltrop site by 2030 We pursue a clear vision: by 2030, our Waltrop site should operate emission-free in Scope 1 and 2. To achieve this, we invest in:
- renewable energy
- electrification
- heat transition
As a sustainable bicycle manufacturer from Germany, sustainability is a long-term commitment that guides every decision we make.
Social
Respect is binding Sustainability, appreciation, trust and honesty, reliability and transparency in communication are binding for all employees and shape our daily actions. In addition, we look beyond our own horizons in all areas and continuously develop processes, roles, and responsibilities.
Health and safety at work Our employees are the foundation of our company. That’s why we continuously invest in:
- ergonomic workplaces in production and administration
- technical support systems such as Airliner systems to ease assembly work
- protective and safety equipment in workshops
- free workplace health management: e.g. sports programmes, company doctors (from 01/07/26 via Werksarztzentrum Deutschland GmbH)
A bright production hall with plenty of daylight and modern break areas contribute to a pleasant working environment.
Work-life balance and flexible working models As a family-friendly employer, we offer flexible working hours, flexitime, and home office options wherever no on-site practical work (e.g. assembly, repair, maintenance) is required. This supports the compatibility of family and career and promotes a healthy work-life balance.
Education, training and development Sustainable development also means building knowledge. That’s why we focus on:
- an annual training budget for all employees
- professional qualification
- training young talent in the bicycle industry
- cooperation with schools (workshops, internships)
- onboarding and integration of unskilled individuals
Flat hierarchies and team-oriented structures encourage active participation and idea sharing.
Transparent salary structure Transparency creates trust. Since 2024, we have implemented a company-wide transparent salary structure that is updated annually. This promotes fairness, traceability, and equal opportunities. Team leaders and senior management are currently excluded.
More women in technology Diversity strengthens innovation. Our long-term goal is to increase the proportion of women in the company to 50%, particularly in technical areas and production. In the short to medium term, we aim for 50% in training positions. Promoting women in technical professions is an important contribution to gender equality in the bicycle industry. Sustainable mobility for our employees Sustainable mobility starts within the company. We actively promote environmentally friendly commuting, for example through:
- use of a Hase Bikes bicycle
- JobRad leasing
- public transport
Together, we reduce CO₂ emissions while promoting a healthy and active form of mobility.
Fair working conditions in the supply chain As a company in the bicycle industry, we take responsibility across the entire value chain. We consistently ensure compliance with labour and human rights in our supply chain. These are monitored by local agencies and through regular visits by the Hase Bikes purchasing team.
Economic
Economic sustainability means making business decisions in a way that ensures long-term success, stability, and future viability. The focus is not only on short-term profit, but on acting responsibly today to remain competitive tomorrow.
For us, this means:
- Think and act long term Decisions are made with future developments in mind
- Use resources efficiently Responsible use of financial and material resources
- Promote innovation Continuous improvement of processes, products and services
- Build stable partnerships Trust-based cooperation with customers, employees and partners
- Strengthen resilience Preparation for economic changes and crises
- Ensure sustainable value creation Focus on long-term business success rather than short-term gains
Why we produce our Pino frames in Taiwan

For us, sustainability means taking responsibility: for quality, partnerships, and the environment. That’s why we produce our Pino frames in Taiwan. This may seem contradictory, but we do so not despite our values – but because of them.
We have worked with the same production partners in Taiwan for many years. Over time, strong business and personal relationships have developed.
During the pandemic, we supported each other.
Our partners pay fair wages, ensure good working conditions, and communicate transparently.
This trust forms the foundation of a fair and sustainable collaboration.
Taiwan is a global leader in high-quality bicycle frame production.
This level of expertise does not exist in the same form in Europe.
We regularly review this decision and consciously choose the solution that makes the most sense for people, the environment, and the product. A production shift that compromises quality would lead to more waste and less durable products – ultimately harming the environment more than helping it. Since 2024, we have also been producing some of our frames in Poland, and in 2025 we began partnerships with Portuguese manufacturers.
Our first sustainability report is online
In our first sustainability report, we provide more detailed insights into our measures and goals, and explain transparently how we use resources responsibly, uphold our social standards, and more.
The report covers our activities up to the year 2023. The project team began its work at the end of 2024 and deliberately chose to present developments up to and including 2023 in order to make our progress as comprehensive as possible. While we are already working on the next report for 2025, which will be published at the beginning of 2027, you will find a summary here as well as the full report for those who would like to explore the topic in greater depth.

FAQs
Here we answer frequently asked questions about sustainability, mobility, and our bicycles.
Bicycles with electric pedal assistance are considered an environmentally friendly alternative to cars – and for good reason. They make it possible to cover longer distances, commuting routes, or transport heavy loads in a climate-friendly way. Especially in everyday life, they often replace car journeys and thus measurably contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions. In addition, our electric Hase Bikes models provide mobility for people who are unable to ride a conventional bicycle for health reasons. In this context, e-bikes mean participation, independence, and quality of life. At the same time, it is important to note that the environmental benefit mainly arises when car journeys are replaced. Switching from a non-motorised bicycle to an e-bike does not significantly improve one’s personal carbon footprint, as batteries, motors, and production also generate emissions. However, e-bikes can encourage people to cycle who would otherwise rely on cars.
Key factors for sustainability therefore include usage patterns, product lifespan, repairability, and the electricity mix used. With durable products, spare parts availability, and the recommendation to charge batteries using renewable energy, e-bikes make an important contribution to climate-friendly mobility.
According to the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), a typical pedelec generates around 15 g CO₂ equivalents per passenger kilometre, whereas a car produces around 194 g. In use, an e-bike is therefore more than twelve times more climate-friendly than a car.
However, production creates a one-time “carbon backpack”: manufacturing a pedelec battery generates approximately 27.5 to 37.5 kg CO₂ equivalents. These emissions occur upfront. What matters is how the e-bike is used. Anyone replacing car journeys with e-bike kilometres saves significant emissions per kilometre.
When these savings are offset against the emissions from battery production, the carbon “backpack” is typically offset after around 150 to 300 kilometres. This means that after a relatively short time, the e-bike becomes more climate-friendly overall than a car – and every additional kilometre further improves the personal carbon footprint.

Bicycles are a particularly sustainable mode of transport because they offer multiple benefits at once: they promote users’ health through physical activity, save space in cities, and reduce traffic congestion and noise. At the same time, they lower air pollution and CO₂ emissions compared to cars. Bicycles improve quality of life in urban environments and support climate-friendly mobility. The more durable and repairable a bicycle is, the more sustainable it becomes over its entire lifecycle.
Yes, cargo bikes are considered a highly sustainable alternative to cars and delivery vehicles, especially in urban environments. They enable the transport of goods, shopping, or children without operational CO₂ emissions and require less space in traffic. However, their environmental impact depends on usage and production. Durable materials, repairable components, and replacing motorised vehicles increase sustainability. When charged with renewable energy, electrically assisted models are almost entirely climate-friendly.In short: cargo bikes combine efficiency, environmental protection, and everyday practicality – making an important contribution to sustainable urban mobility.
